Certabo custom board (1)

Hello all,

I would like to share some pictures of my custom board which I bought from Certabo 3 years ago. It is made from five different woods: tulipier, macassar ebony, boubinga, boxwood and wenge. It resulted from a vague design idea, several pictures of boards from around the world I liked, excellent to and fro communication with Pietro and great suggestions and fine work by Certabo’s luthier and team. The pictures include the board with my four different chess sets. It’s better than what I wanted/hoped for and I really enjoy the quality of it. This is my way of saying thank you especially to Pietro (and his team), to Rishi at the chess empire who made my custom set and to Bryan Whitby of this forum who first drew my attention to Certabo with his posting online.

Cheers, John K

Wow - beautiful. You have great taste.

Thank you. I have plans to add a complementary thin base to it a bit like my old mephisto munchen (alas long gone) and house any stuff inside it.

Hello John!

Really nice, could you tell me/us about the the second shown chesspieces, they really look like ready for blitz.

Hello, Mcv,

Thank your your question.

I wanted a set that was relatively lightly weighted and based on the 10x8 Archbishop Chancellor set used for "Capablanca Chess." I added two pieces that I found in the History of Chess book that intrigued me - the Amazon Queen which can move like a Queen and a Knight and a Joker which imitates the last moved piece of the opponent.

I sent desired weights for each piece and possible designs based on pictures to Rishi at the Chess Empire and after some good email debates, he did the rest. I based the rooks and bishops loosely on the design of the outstanding Noj East/West set. I got East and west finials for the Kings too. I can use the various pieces interchangeably on the Certabo board which makes for a visual treat. I've tried what's sometimes called eg Capablanca or Fairy chess etc on my 10x8 board but my brain cannot cope with more than one or two games a year. If you want a custom set, I can certainly recommend Rishi's work.

As for blitz, I agree that this set is probably the best for that. I was very prescriptive about height, shape and weight as I have large hands and wanted pieces that felt good. The shape of the Kings and Queens and the curved central portions particularly took several exchanges but Rishi kept his temper and did what I asked for. It's bordering on me being pathetic, I realise, but I got what I wanted and I really like this set to look at and play with. I've got a very heavy set which is different and maybe better, I think, for the longer game or correspondence.

Hope that answers your question.

All the best, John

Hello John,

thanks for your explanation. Story sells; so I bought them in 3.5 Inches for a smaller board but non "Capablanca Chess." 😉

Cheers

Michael
