Is it possible to reduce the diameter of the chips by cutting them?

I would like to make a drill in my wooden pieces to put the chips inside (more or less a drill 15mm diameter and 1 mm depth) , and after that put the felt. So, the pieces will have a totally normal appearance. The problem is that it is very dangerous to make a drill bigger than 15-16mm beacause the wood could break. I have pawns with 22mm diameter base. My chips are 20mm diameter.

So my question is the next: is it possible to reduce the diameter of the chips by cutting them? If yes, which shoulf be the minimum diameter? Is it possible to cut to 15mm? I have checked the chip with a strong light through it and it seems that the chip is in the center and also there is a black part  around the center (approximately of 15mm diameter). See the photo.

Have anybody cutted the chips? If not, I will wait Pietro to reply.

Thank you very much.

Hello Jaume

The black part you see is the antenna and it is very thin copper wire coil. The chip + antenna itself is about 15mm then there is pvc enclosure around, with bit of clearance and thinkness of plastic you get up to 20mm.

Trying to reduce the diameter will result in breaking the enclosure and amlost sure cut the copper wire. If you want to house inside the wood you can but you shall start from naked chips directly and use hot glue or araldite, we have those naked chips as we embedd in our 2,5" they are bit delicate but not very difficult to use some Certabo friends did already the job and Harald did also nice guide how to do here the link there were also picture but we lost some when we migrated the forum.

Hello Pietro.

Thank you for your quick reply.

According to your comments, if I cut the chips without touching the copper they will work, right? I mean, I can use a grinder or sander machine to reduce the diameter only removing the PVC part. Of course very carefully.

Also I am interested in the naked chipds. How much they cost? Also I have a question: my pieces have a metal weight. Do these naked chips work if I glue them so close to the metal weight?

By the other hand, I cannot see any picture in the post from Harald you referred in your reply.

Thank you very much for your attention.
