OTG with Huawei mediapad m5 doesn´t work (Android 9.1)

I have discovered a strange behaviour with my new Huawei Mediapad m5.

When I connect my Certabo chessboard via OTG, about 95% of the time it does not work. But sometimes it does.

With my Huawei P20 (Android 10) the connection with the same OTG adapter always works perfectly.

If I attach an USB stick to the tablet, it always works perfectly, but not with the board.

I wouldn't be surprised if it never works with the board, but it does work from time to time....normally, such things either work or not....

At the end of the cable the green LED usually lights up as soon as you plug the cable into the OTG adapter. This LED switches off, as soon as I plug the cable into the chessboard and there is no connection. If the connection works, the LED works too. What can be the reason for this? Obviously the board is sometimes recognised, but unfortunately most of the time not.

Hello Julian

I think some Huwawei devices have some issue with OTG and device which require some power more than a usb stick.

Normally those should be rated for 500mA as standard usb 2.0 standards but for some reasons it looks limited by phone hardware not sure intentionally or there is some firmware bugs. Anyhow this is also the same on Apple devices which i think they not allow more than few mA on otg. Not sure if they recently changed.

I think Graham had similar problem with Huwawei and he did a bit of research on matter.

Anyhow please try an Y otg cable so the board is supplied by the power bank not by phone, also you can try a bit more powerful device like hd and see if it detects or has enough power to run it.

All the best

Pietro

My problem is with a Samsung S20 and I never did get my Fazio board working with it. I turned on USB debugging through the Developer Options and it told me that the external device needed a power supply so something in the S20 is stopping the USB port putting out enough power.

I contacted Samsung here in New Zealand but of course they know nothing about external chess boards. They suggested I take my phone to the service centre (a two hour drive away) for checking, but that wouldn't help anyway as my wife's S20 behaves exactly the same way.

Good luck,

Graham

Yes, it looks like a limitation of mA output. The only thing I´m wondering about is, that it works from time to time. And if it works, it works without any problems, but as soon as I unplug the cable it will not be recognized again.

Hi Julian

Sorry for bit delay, I answer to your question. When you have device rated lets say 300mA this means it will consume that current during operation. But all electric and eclectronic devices has  a so called inrush current this means when you connect or disconnect the current peak can be and normally is higher than rated one. Thic because there can be inductor load or capacitors which need to be charged up. This peak is normally very short msec but normally all power supply or usb connector have to consider this. I reckon some phones like this maybe a bit on the edge so sometime they manage to overcome the peak but if they do not the system won't turn on.

What you can try is just connect the power bank for start so it will overcome the peak and after connected just unplug the power bank and the phone should remain connected to the board. If it works it's due to this probably

Let us know all the best

...yes, this worsks.

by the way: wouldn´t it be possible to offer your bluetooth modul with integrated powerbank (5000mA should be more than enough) and the possibility to connect it directly with the board´s USB ( without cable). This could be a really great successor......
