Very impressed and happy!

Hi all from the Netherlands,

Just wanted to post a thank you to @pietro-mandurino.

I'm a happy owner of a Vittoria Reloaded Brown and the 2,75”chess set, accompanied wih the DaVinci Extreme. It's a beautiful chess board and chess set. The DaVinci is a great little computer.

Just this night I received my Certabo Carrying bag (thanks @arnold :-)) . The board fits snug and perfect in the bag. I use one pocket for the chess pieces and the other pocket for my DaVinci computer, battery pack and necessary cables. Ready to hit the road and play a lots and lots of chess.

Overall very happy with the design, build quality and high end materials. I love the portability of this "smaller" Vitorria board and DaVinci, together with the carrying bag.

Cheers,

Reint.

groeten,

Reint.

P.S: Sorry to all other users for the Dutch post. TLDR: I did research in all the other options for a digital board, and decided for Certabo for a multitude of reasons and happy with my choice. Some minor issues under Linux, which is covered in another post.

Pietro helped me get things running on my linux system (I use Solus linux, a somewhat lesser known distro) at that time with release 3.5 of the Certabo software.  It can be found over here: https://github.com/CERTABO/Release3.5 .

I had to install several python modules as mentioned at the just named URL. In my linux system sometimes they had a slightly other (package)name.

Along the way I ran into changing errors after every step, but most of the time they just pointed me out which modules were still missing. Amongst them the bereserk module and a module called lru-dict.

So with some trial and error and advised by Pietro along the way (via Twitter private messaging via CertaboChess account) I got that running by typing python3 run.py from the CLI.

Not much later Pietro kindly sent me a 3.7 version, although it has an URL here at https://github.com/CERTABO/Release-3.7 , the full package is not found there however and came to me via a download offered by Pietro.

Since then (December 2020 that is)  I used version 3.7 of the Certabo software which is started slightly different by python3 main.py in the CLI.

I used it for a while on my favourite chess site lichess and took part in two of the early tournaments of the Certabo International Club at lichess.

After that Pietro also guided me step-by-step how I could add an engine in the software and finally when asked he explained to me what some of the several possible settings in the preferences actually mean (Depth, Threads, Contempt, Ponder etcetera). I added a stockfish analysis engine.

Now fast forward to February 2022.....it appears I actually hadn't used my Certabo eboard for quite a long time (hard to imagine, but..). And now I wanted to reply to your questions in this forum it appears my software was broken and no longer functional ;-(

BUT AGAIN Pietro was quick and very helpful in searching for fixes together. The kind and fully dedicated support by Pietro and team Certabo are superb from the beginning, I also very much like their open-source minded  work. I think some of the previous installed dependencies somehow became broken during system upgrades of my Solus linux OS (a rolling release). I had to reinstall some modules and we also tried to work in a virtual environment.

Rather quickly I got the Certabo 3.7 software working again on my linux OS, i.e. the Certabo software client recognising the pieces on my eboard, but.....now the lichess board API was no longer functioning as it should. It did not pick up the first two moves, which could be bypassed when you played White but I could not bypass that when playing with Black, actually it was stuck.

Pietro soon found out that it was a matter of a changed board API on the lichess side which could actually give a bug for all Certabo users no matter which operating system was used. The lichess folks explained to Pietro what had changed and yesterday it became clear it took just one edit in a single lichess.py file (deleting one word  from"set_board_fen" to now "set_fen"....) to fix this. Now since yesterday I have my Certabo eboard running again under Solus linux and also with a working board API for playing online at lichess.

Along the way From 2020 to now in between our dialogue both Pietro and I were not reluctant to make a joke and share a sense of humour every now and then.

I must visit Bologna "the red town" sometime, for a meet and greet with Pietro in real life.....

BTW Pietro will spend some days now immediately in order to fix the lichess board API for the Certabo software clients for all operating systems..what a hero !

UPDATE: there is a 4.1 version available for use in linux as well, Pietro just mentioned (need I say more?) - https://github.com/CERTABO/Release-4.1-BT/tree/master

Hi Michiel

Thank you for the long review (you are too gentle)  and yes wait for you in Bologna (nice Italian meal and wine wait for you) 🙂 and for every friend who may  want to come and visist us.

Yes that modification in the protocol did break the communication when starting the game but anyhow it is simple fix. For those who are running source files or DaVinci unit just open with text editor the file lichess.py in lichess direcotry go around row 159 (row can be different depending on version but there is only one place where to modify) and just change from set_board_fen to set_fen see picture. For those using compiled version for Windows Mac we are recompiling the software and will be ready in few days for download. In the meantime to get around the issue for Win and Mac  just make the first move with mouse the game will resume and can keep playing on the board.

Btw Harald who did  has also already updated his reporitory reflecting the modification available at https://github.com/haklein/certabo-lichess/pull/10/commits/9d31f520a39fc28af2f1a82f65135d62d52cf6f2 thanks!

All the best

Pietro
